Educational Sponsorships

September 2021

Project Tumaini is making an impact in the lives of Kenya’s youth is through educational sponsorships.  Our Kenyan pastors have identified 10 vulnerable students who were in need of sponsorships.    One student is in primary school and is attending a boarding school.  You’ll learn more of her story below. The other nine students are in secondary school and are from a children’s home in a slum area near the Mathare slum in Nairobi.

The children’s home is run on 100% donations and can only send the children to secondary school if the funds are available.  Even though Kenya says its secondary school (equivalent to U.S. high school) is free, it depends on the type of school:  Government (public) and Private schools which can be either boarding or day school and clustered as National, Provincial, County and Sub-county schools. The school fees depends on the cluster of the school the student is attending with National school being the highest.  Every child in 8th grade takes a national exam at the end of the school year. The government assigns the school the child will attend; which isn’t necessarily close to where they live.  The school could be hours from home, requiring the child to be boarded.   The average annual cost of a day school is approximately $220 which the government covers approximately $150.  The average cost of a boarding school is $800 a year which the government covers $150 and the parents are responsible for $650.  In addition, families are responsible for the purchase of books, mattress and bedding, uniforms, and personal items which is approximately $200 (many items are a one-time cost for first year of secondary school).  Project Tumaini has committed to support eight of these students for grades 9-12 and one other student for grades 10-12.  The students are attending provincial and county boarding schools.

COVID-19 Food Distribution

September 29, 2020

Yesterday Project Tumaini coordinated with PMI-Thika Road to provide 30 families from the Good Green Pasture School and 10 families from the church who were in much need of some essential items. We are going to continue to do this periodically until school is scheduled to resume in January.
